When you begin your search for a photographer you may begin to ask yourself, “Do I really need to hire a professional photographer"? In the age of Digital Photography where everyone owns a fancy digital camera and has the capability to take a “good enough” picture, you have to ask yourself do I need a professional photographer. What is it about a professionally photographed image that makes it that much better?
As a photographer I am constantly aware of the trends that are always changing in the ever evolving industry of photography. Taking a picture may seem simple enough, especially in Hawaii; a breathtaking background, good weather, quality lighting, add a subject and viola, the perfect combo for a great looking portrait, right? But is it really that simple? What kind of skill and understanding is necessary to pull off a great portrait? To put it simply, owning the tools required and becoming a weekend “shutter bug” isn’t always good enough. Sometimes you need an artist’s touch to create a great photograph. A great photograph is one that tells a story and has the ability to captivate its audience.
So what does a professional do differently to create such amazing work? Well, as a professional standing behind the camera I am constantly making creative decisions on how to best achieve the desired results in my finial product. I use extensive knowledge of my equipment to determine the most artistic way to capture an image. I am always thinking about light, were it is coming from, its quality and how I can use it to help tell my story. I am also deciding what angle is most flattering and can create a more dramatic result. I am thinking about what elements of the background are important to the image and which ones will distract from it. As a professional with many years of experience under my belt I also know that when it comes to photography it is all about the details. Remembering to capture all of the often overlooked details can only come with experience. I also am focused on what is important to my client. With each photo shoot I request that my clients fill out a questionnaire insuring that I can give them quality images that represent who they are. At the end of the photo shoot what you are really paying for is not just your final images, but the journey taken to achieve those final images. Concept, creativity, equipment and skill all working together are crucial to achieving amazing results and are the very reasons why you should hire a professional photographer. Feeling confident that the photographer you hire feels just as strongly as you do about your images, will insure that you will receive images that you can cherish for years to come.
The differences between a professional and that of a weekend photographer are that the images that you see by working with a professional are intentional and deliberate not mere coincidence or accidents. A single good photograph can be produced by anyone, but a successful photo shoot can only be produced by an individual with the skill, creativity, and commitment necessary to meet the client’s needs. When you find a photographer that you can bond with, it’s a great thing. A happy client + a happy photographer = great results.
